Acrylic Orchid Slotted Design
The Full Story
Around the time that I was tasked with coming up with a slotted design, I received an orchid as a gift and was inspired to try and recreate this pant as a colorful acrylic tabletop piece. I must have spent 6 hours staring at the plant and working on the individual pieces and how they might fit together. I ended up making it less proportional to the real thing and more like a caricature-style of the shapes themselves to aid in the design process. This is a relatively small piece (~ 6 x 4 inches) but my dream would be to build giant versions of this in some kind of acrylic garden exhibit with the assistance of some cleverly placed lights. But it was a good start and I loved the result!

The Process
1
Sketch and Ideate pieces
2
3D model the pieces for the thickness of acrylic I intended to use using Fusion 360 and piece it together
3
3D Printed a prototype to test viability of design, proportions, and fitting of the slots
4
Set up pieces in 2D for laser cutting and test with acrylic. Adjust pieces until all slots fit snugly and the file is good for repeated cuts. Experiment with combinations of colors etc.
